Christmas Gifts and New Year Wishes

Happy Holidays from the Sports Brothers! We hope that you got what you wanted, as well as did a little giving back. For our final column of 2010, we’d like to give gifts to individuals in the sports world. Yea we’re a little late, but don’t blame us. Blame it on your mail carrier! Let’s begin.

For Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross- $12 million dollars. Exactly the amount of money Bill Parcells stole from the Dolphins. He leaves a franchise in disarray and probably in worst shape than when he got it 3 years ago. His contract allowed him to leave at any time, and get his full amount of money.

For Dolphins Coach Tony Sparano- The classified section from The Miami Times. If (or when) the team loses to New England Patriots this coming Sunday, Tony will need it to find another gig.

For Dolphins Offensive Coordinator Dan Henning- an express ticket to a retirement home in Arizona. Not all of the Dolphins offensive woes can be placed on his shoulders, but he should take a lot of blame for inconsistency  and bad play calling. Happy retirement Dan. After this season the only thing you will be calling are the numbers from a Bingo game at the senior home.

For Randy Shannon- A second chance with another program. There’s no doubt that Shannon is a motivator, father figure, and great mentor to young men. Unfortunately in the business of college football, you can be all of those things but if you don’t win you’ll be out of a job. At Shannon’s next stop, let’s hope he has assistants and players that won’t let him down. Oh and an administration without an itchy trigger finger.

For new UM coach Al Golden- the off the field success of Randy Shannon, but the on the field success of Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson, and Howard Schnellenberger.

For Chad Henne- Confidence, consistency, and the Soul Train DVD set, to give him some “soul”. The man is too stiff in the pocket.

For Dwyane Wade, Lebron James, and Chris Bosh- Plenty of rings.

For Donavan McNabb- a pair of balls. You’ve gotten benched in Philly. You got traded from Philly. You’ve gotten called out in Washington for not being in shape or knowing the playbook. They gave you a bogus contract supposedly worth $78 million, but in reality you will only get $3 million when they cut you after the season. Finally you get benched for Rex Grossman and you’re demoted to 3rd string. Yet in all of those moves, you remain professional and calm. BLEEP THAT!! Please go off on a mf’er. It’s time you show your behind! McNabb is respected and loved in many circles, so going off one time won’t ruin your rep. But come on man! Say something and stop taking the mental whippings.

For Tiger Woods- Your first win of 2011

Finally for our Miami Times readers-  we will continue to give you the best that we can on a weekly basis. Thanks for reading our column and listening to our show. Happy New Year!

RATTLERS-WILDCATS GAME IS A BOOST FOR FLORIDA CLASSIC

The fashion. The women. The music. The tail gating. Did I mention the women? Oh..and the football game! Yes, that is what the Florida Classic is all about right, the football game? No. It’s about all of the above. And when the football teams are good, as were the 2010-2011 versions of the FAMU Rattlers and the B-CU Wildcats, the Florida Classic is all the better.

The Wildcats of B-CU came in riding a 10 game winning streak under their new head coach Brian Jenkins. The Rattlers came in 8-3, hoping to spoil the perfect season for the ‘Cats, and praying for a share of the MEAC championship. Even though the Rattlers were all but mathematically out of a playoff berth, Saturday’s game was  in essence, their season. After going into halftime behind 27-14, the Rattlers scored 24 un-answered points, and shut the Wildcat offense out in the second half to win 38-27. They now share the MEAC championship with the Rattlers getting rings for the first time since 2001.

Having been to several Florida Classic games as a member of the FAMU Marching 100, I’ve seen some good and some bad. I’ve seen some bad football. I’ve seen the malls in Tampa close early because they didn’t want “those kids” running through the mall. I’ve seen the move to Orlando, and the boost that move made for attendance and the spirit of the game. I’ve seen Disney World come in and give both schools and it’s alumni carte-blanche. I’ve also seen the mouse pick up his bags and take his sponsorship dollars elsewhere.

As all this was happening, I also saw the Bayou Classic, the annual meeting of Grambling State University and Southern University, get prime time coverage on a large 3 letter network. They even show the halftime show in it’s entirety! While the Fl. Classic saw a boost in attendance from 1997-2007 and even overshadowing the Bayou Classic, it still feels as if it is “Classic B” to their “Classic A”.

Both teams look to be contenders for the MEAC crown for years to come because of the coaching staffs and the level of players they recruit yearly. This can only bode well for the steady improvement of the Florida Classic from a game standpoint. Sure the tailgaters will be there, the vendors will be there, and the women will be there. But when the teams are good, the Florida Classic is better. Let’s hope this trend continues.

WADE, BOSH, & LEBRON

The folks of South Florida are sending prayers up like crazy since this story broke early Monday morning. As a resident of Miami, I will say that the possibility sounds great. The hottest ticket in town will be a Heat ticket no doubt. South Beach will be crazy.

There will be more breaking news on this story as it develops. We’ll keep you updated as much as possible.

But can it happen? Stay tuned….

(BILLIONAIRE) OLSEN TWINS FATHER CRIES BROKE

Unless your parents are the scum of the Earth, there really is no reason for them to want anything in their older lives. Especially parents of children who are/were child stars. It may be hard to fathom what a parent of a up and coming child star may go thru as that parent. I would imagine a lot of sacrifice is made on the part of the parents, so that their kids can attain the heights of stardom.

MARY-KATE and ASHLEY OLSEN’s father has filed for bankruptcy and is facing foreclosure on his California home, according to a U.S. report.

David Olsen, who fathered the billionaire twins with his first wife Jamie, has fallen behind on payments for his property in Tarzana and owes the bank almost $2.2 million (£1.47 million).

According to documents obtained by the National Enquirer , the stars’ dad and his second wife MCKenzie will be forced out of the house on 9 July (10) if they fail to settle their debt and the property will be sold off at a public auction.
But it’s not the first time Olsen Sr. has faced financial difficulty – he reportedly struggled to cover his tax debts last year (09) too.

An insider tells the Enquirer, “David almost lost his home in 2009 because he had several tax liens but managed to borrow enough money to cover them. But he’s in a worse position now because he’s behind on mortgage payments and won’t be able to stop the auction unless he gets his hands on $2 million.”

DR. DRE AND TIMBALAND SUPRISE HIGH SCHOOL KIDS WITH CONCERT

At first it sounds like the run of the mill shameless promotion artist and record labels do for themselves, but as you read the article, you will see it’s quite the opposite. It’s actually for a good cause.

Dr. Dre and Timbaland went back to school Wednesday night.
The rapper-producers shocked students when they appeared at a Culver City High School graduation party. Dr. Dre introduced Timbaland, who performed the tunes “The Way I Are,” “Promiscuous Girl,” “Carry Out” and “Say Something” on a stage inside the school’s gymnasium. Students invited had no idea the hip-hop masterminds were the guests of honor.
“When we walked in, we were like, ‘Whoa. Is this a second prom?'” said 17-year-old junior Saul Salmeron.
The surprise performance was sponsored by Hewlett-Packard and Interscope Records, who have partnered with the aim of improving digital sound quality. The promotional event, which was recorded for an online documentary, also featured free food, photos and a raffle of HP gear. The company said it was donating $10,000 worth of computer equipment to the school.
“Y’all got a curfew?” Timbaland asked the audience at one point.
Students held up their camera phones and gathered around the stage to get a glimpse of Timbaland and Dr. Dre, who sneaked a peek of the crowd before he took the stage. Dr. Dre, who is currently working on his next album, did not perform with labelmate Timbaland, whom he’s never worked with before.
Is a possible first-time collaboration is in the works?
“We should be so lucky,” said Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope, Geffen and A&M Records, who attended Wednesday’s event. “I can only get them so close. The rest is up to them.”

I never realized that the two have never performed or worked together. How in the hell is that possible? Maybe there will be a change once Dr. Dre releases the forever and a day anticipated “Detox” album.

JAY-Z AND EMINEM SURPRISE CONCERT

You gotta love the summer time. Usually the time of the year when network tv shows put on their run of the mill concert in the mall/park/plaza series.

Even the biggest stars are not exempt from pulling off a concert in the mall/park/plaza, as Jay Z and Eminem pulled off a surprise concert recently.

from 923.com

Last week rumors swirled that a secret Jay-Z concert would take place on Monday in New York City. The blogs sprung into action, sleuthing out the details and eventually revealing that Jay-Z and special guest Eminem would appear together on The Late Show with David Letterman, performing atop the show’s famous marquee on Broadway in Times Square.

The outdoor concert was timed to promote the release of Em’s new album Recovery, out NOW.

After word of the free concert leaked, Mayor Mike Bloomberg pulled the plug on things, citing the near-riot that greeted Drake‘s recent outdoor show on New York’s waterfront. So it came as a surprise to everyone when, late Monday afternoon, Eminem and Jay-Z suddenly appeared on the rooftop of the Ed Sullivan Theater to perform their set for The Late Show.
